St Francis Fields

The Big Help Out, sunflowers and the next Yard of Ale weekend

After a nail-biting wait, the good news is that we have been successful in our application to the National Garden Scheme for a grant towards developing our Community Produce Garden.

This allows us to turbo-charge our aspiration for field 9 purchasing a large polytunnel, a composting toilet, a shed, wheelbarrows, tools, benches and so much more.  Evidently the scheme received many worthy applications so the fact that St Francis Fields was selected makes it even more special.

The aim of our garden is simple:

‘A community garden for villagers to grow fresh produce, to share among themselves and to share with other residents.’

The golden thread that runs through our vision for the garden is ‘sharing.’

This year, the national volunteering event the Big Help Out is set over the weekend of 8 & 9 June.  Over this weekend we will be inviting residents to come and look at how the garden is progressing and talk further about plans.  We will be on site from 14:00 – 17:00 on both days.  Please come and see us and see if you’d like to get involved.

Also, over this weekend, and on both afternoons, we will be asking for volunteers to come to the St Francis Fields hub to help develop the accessible garden – painting pallets that will be turned into planters, painting terracotta pots, and planting these up.

And the good news is that the Yard of Ale pub will be open during that weekend.  See below for more details of the pub opening weekends.

But before that, on Saturday 4 May between 14:00 – 16:00 at the St Francis Fields hub, it was the ‘grow-your-own sunflower’ event for children in the village.  Children were invited to plant a seed marked with their name, and then these will be planted out in the Community Produce Garden when ready.

It’ll then be up to the children to decide what to do with their sunflower once it’s mature – collect the seeds, cut it and put it in a vase for mum etc
