Pick Up A Pumpkin

Northiam villagers braved the wet weather to visit St Francis Fields pumpkin field this past week. Residents, including many children, enjoyed a ‘Pick up a Pumpkin’ experience and have had great fun choosing, picking and taking pumpkins home ready to carve for Halloween.

All contributions for the pumpkins have been donated to Rye Food Bank, and we’re delighted that this amounted to the grand total of £450. Many thanks to everyone who donated.

The pumpkins were grown on part of the 34 acre St Francis Fields community site, situated in the heart of Northiam Village. The site is managed on behalf of Northiam Parish Council by the St Francis Fields Community Interest Company, who set up The 'A' Team – a group of volunteer with varying skills who help to maintain the land whose expertise is invaluable. It was The ‘A’ Team’s idea to cultivate a pumpkin patch for the children of Northiam to see and experience how produce is grown, and this venture has proved a huge success!

What a pleasure it has been to witness the childrens’ excitement and delight when choosing their favourite pumpkin for Halloween. Many thanks to Emily Leroy-Lewis for sharing her photos.

An unintended consequence of our first pumpkin season was that some of them grew to enormous proportions! So much so that one of them won first prize at the local Horticultural Society Autumn Show, and another giant was taken to the local church to take a prime position in their Harvest Festival celebrations.

All in all, a wonderful example of the village community coming together for the enjoyment of everyone.
